The Butchart Gardens were started by Jennie Butchart (1866–1950) in 1909 when her husbands' limestone quarry was exhausted. After much planning Jennie completed the sunken garden in 1921 and it was the first of many different locations that were added over the years. The gardens are still being run by the Butchart family after 100 years and are regarded as a national treasure of Vancouver Island.
