Installing Arcane Dimensions
|
|
|
Due to the age of the game Quake the installation process for new
content is not an easy task and to someone familiar with modern
games it will feel confusing and strange. There are a couple of
really good guides on Steam like
Quake Engines, Old and New
by Johnny Law and
Custom Singleplayer Levels
by negke which explain how to install new engines and
custom content.
This installation guide will assume no prior knowledge and will go
through all the steps necessary to buy, install and setup Quake
for a windows environment. Arcane Dimensions is not a standalone
product and does require the original game to work, which nicely
leads on to the first point.
Step 1 - Buying Quake!
Both versions of the game are priced the same and are often on Sale
during the holiday seasons for the chance of a bargin! The
GoG version
is regarded as the better deal because it does not have any
DRM
and includes the amazing
sound track
by
Trent Razor
of Nine Inch Nails!
Step 2 - Download New Quake Engine!
The Arcane Dimensions MOD will not work with the original Quake
engine because it breaks so many of the old engine limits. The
AD MOD requires a new Quake engine with extended limits
like the following two clients -
Quakespasm v0.91+
and
DP build 20140513.
Quakespasm
is regarded by the community as a faithfully classic version with less
eye candy
and a much more modest rendering of the game.
Darkplaces
on the other hand goes in the opposite direction with plenty of eye
candy support and several subtle
game play changes. The MOD will detect and adapt to either
new Quake engine and change the visuals to suit.
Step 3 - Installing Quake!
|
|
| |
|
|
|
There are many ways to setup Quake with different operation system,
but for sake of simplicity
this guide will show how to install Quake and the MOD files
in a new folder for a windows OS like the listing to the side.
The folder structure to the side is broken down into three
different areas as follows:-
Quake |
New Quake Engine files |
AD |
Arcane Dimensions MOD files |
ID1 |
Original Quake game files |
Each new folder is listed below and this guide
assumes you understand how to create folders, move files around
and how to unzip or extract files to different folders.
|
Quake ID1 Folder
The Quake ID1 folder should contain the two pak files (pak0 and pak1)
from the
Steam
or
GoG
directories. These two files contain all of the Quake
game assets and are all that is required to get Quake working
with a replacement Quake engine like
QuakeSpasm
or
Darkplaces.
The music folder is where the new engines
(QuakeSpasm
or
Darkplaces)
expect to find the sound files for the game.
Unfortunately the music files are only available with the
GoG
version of Quake and the setup of the music folder can safely be ignored by
Steam
users.
Quake AD Folder
Arcane Dimensions should be setup in a separate directory from the ID
pak files and not stored together. Copy the final AD zip file into the
"AD" folder and extract the contents.
Copy the AD patch and extract the contents over the top of the "AD" directory.
Overwriting files can be a problem for Mac users, please check internet forums
for help with this issue.
The AD source files are not stored in a pak file so that anybody can
change or move around the source files however they like. The MOD is also
aimed at mappers as well
as players and includes all the source QC files so that they can be merged
or changed for personal projects.
Quake Base Folder
Once the game and AD MOD folder has been setup the new Quake client
should be copied to the base of the Quake folder.
This installation guide is focusing on the QuakeSpasm client, but the
DarkPlaces client is just as easy to setup and should not present
any additional problems.
When extracting the QuakeSpasm zip file make sure to find
the engine files (shown above) and not any additional folders
like 'quakespasm-0.91.0_windows'. All of the engine files
should go into the new Quake base folder because the engine needs
to find both 'ID1' and 'AD' folders together.
Step 4 - Running Quake
To run the Arcane Dimensions MOD, right click on the QuakeSpasm EXE and
create a
shortcut. Edit the properities of the shortcut (right-click) and
change the target field to add the following '-game AD' on to the
end of the line. Save these changes and then double click on the shortcut.
The QuakeSpasm engine should load up and from the menu,
select a new game and your journey begins!
